Understanding your Esophagus
The esophagus carries food from the mouth to the stomach, protected by a valve that keeps stomach acid where it belongs. When that valve weakens, acid reflux (GERD) results — usually very treatable with lifestyle changes and medication, and with day-care gastroscopy or anti-reflux surgery reserved for cases that need more.
Long-standing, poorly controlled acid reflux can injure the esophagus over years. Knowing which symptoms are red flags — and getting an accurate diagnosis — helps you get the right level of care early.
