What is liver cancer?
Liver cancer most commonly arises in people with long-standing liver disease. The main type, hepatocellular carcinoma, develops in damaged or cirrhotic livers, which is why high-risk patients benefit from regular surveillance.
Symptoms & diagnosis
Early liver cancer often has no symptoms and is found on surveillance scans. Later signs include upper-abdomen pain, weight loss and jaundice. Diagnosis uses ultrasound, CT/MRI and tumour markers.
Treatment options
Early tumours are treated by surgical resection or, in selected cases, liver transplantation — both potentially curative. Ablation, embolisation and systemic therapy are used depending on stage and liver function.
