Yellow Eyes to Relief: Clearing a Blocked Bile Duct by Endoscopy

Deep jaundice from a bile-duct stone relieved by ERCP — no open surgery needed.

Presentation

A patient arrived with yellow eyes, dark urine and itching that had worsened over a week.

Investigations

Blood tests showed an obstructive pattern; MRCP revealed a stone lodged in the lower bile duct blocking bile flow.

Operative Findings

A single stone was impacted in the common bile duct, causing back-pressure jaundice — an emergency for the liver if left untreated.

Surgical Strategy

An endoscopic approach (ERCP) was chosen to clear the duct from the inside, avoiding open surgery, followed later by gallbladder removal.

The Procedure

At ERCP the duct was opened, the stone extracted, and a temporary stent placed to ensure free bile drainage.

Outcome

Jaundice and itching settled within days; liver tests normalised over the following weeks.

Follow-up

A planned key-hole gallbladder removal prevented any recurrence; the stent was removed on schedule. ERCP and bile-duct stone treatment is available with Dr. Avinash Tank at Dwarika Hospital, Ahmedabad — book a consultation for a personalised opinion.

Learning point

Most bile-duct stones causing jaundice can be cleared by endoscopy (ERCP) — fast relief without a major operation.
